Sai... dunno how to do my tutorial leh.

Just now had driving lesson. It was raining and quite an experience! Though this time I didn't stall at all, I made quite a lot of immediate failure mistakes..

I cross stop lines when I'm not supposed to and i don't cross some when I'm supposed to. When I approached an uncontrolled junction, turning left from a minor road, I remembered to angle the car left but I didn't manage to stop before the stop line. When I went to a u-turn junction, I remembered that I have to go out till half-door distance and angle out a bit, then I forgot what happened but I stopped at the stop line when it was green in my favour. Weird me.

Then I did one short turn during which I only dropped to 2nd gear halfway thru the turn. I should have already slowed down enough to drop to 2nd before the turn. And other times where I stepped clutch when I wasn't supposed to. For eg turning left on a filter lane, I braked until it was quite slow then suddenly I just stepped clutch.. Somehow I was thinking 'Oh no, very slow liao, dun step clutch will stall'.

Then on another occasion I had to suddenly slow down when I turned into the carpark at my place. A woman suddenly crossed the road halfway thru my turn then I quickly jammed down the clutch and braked also, thinking I had to come to a complete stop. Then got told off cos I shouldn't have stepped clutch, just brake cos the woman would have gotten out of the way in time so I should have braked, then let go before the car stalled.

Philosophy to ponder upon.

What is the philosophy behind COMPLEX NUMBERS and the 'Imaginary' operator i?

I'm thinking. Why is something that is IMAGINARY so pervasive in something as REAL and PRACTICAL as engineering and mathematics?!

For the uninitiated, (FARTs such as terr, ghz and the other pangster; the academic youngsters : jiahui ; the seldom exposed : pok) complex numbers are extremely useful and pervasive in electrical engineering in the least.

Many analyses of engineering systems, models, approximations, require at least some if not complete use of complex numbers. Contrary to what the name seems to imply, complex analysis isn't complex at all! In fact if you tried to do the analysis using real numbers, it would be very difficult, much more difficult than using complex numbers and it might even be impossible! On the other hand using complex numbers, the analysis might even be neatly done in a few lines! If you really can't understand or appreciate the above, well just take my word for it and use your superior intelligence to at least understand this.

How can something imagined, made up, created out of thin air, be so useful and have such concrete results and applications?! Doesn't take much for me to imagine some mathematical quantity but chances are it's just plain rubbish.. yet how did complex numbers come about and actually turn out to be such a great engineering tool?! I'm totally baffled.

Having too long a break between driving lessons is not a good thing. My last lesson was Tuesday of the previous week and I lost that feel and control of the pedals. The car shook a lot, due to me letting go of the clutch a wee bit too early (not so early that I stalled the car), steering was not smooth and coordination slowed.

Damn stressed today... did one right turn out from a minor road. Wah lau.. so difficult, have to keep waiting and waiting. It was made worse by the impatient drivers behind me, turning right from my left blocking my view. Wait so long that I also slacked my focus and stalled at the line.

Then another long long line waiting to u-turn. There was another rookie way up front, taking forever to do her u-turn. Then when it was finally my turn, I had also lost my focus and stalled too.. shit man. That's not the worst... after restarting the engine (the fellas behind were still patient enough) I was staring so intently at the oncoming traffic I didn't notice the red light come up and green arrow appear. I was still staring at the approaching van then got horned by the long line....

Not to mention other sudden situations at junctions. Cars cutting in and suddenly when I was just like a wheel to the line, the light turned amber and I have to jam the brakes. Done one rather long stretch of road I climbed to 4th gear but I didn't brake enough to bring the speed down in order to drop to 3rd gear for engine brake.

Damn stressed.. not to mention I almost forgotten how to do the 3 point turn and directional change I learnt the last lesson.

I borrowed a book from Marine Parade library, CHAOS : Making a new Science by James Gleick. It's the recommended reading for my Taming Chaos module and it is bloody INTERESTING!!

Makes me feel that all my years of studying science(physics and chemistry) in Secondary school and JC have been, as the book puts it, 'missing the point'! Engineering at NUS still retains a shred of dignity in the face of this book solely because engineering has made real and put to application all the lofty theories of physicists and chemists and such theorists to create the technological wealth of the modern world.

Traditional theorists and modern theorists of the last few decades are really put in quite a lousy light in this book. They are arrogant and ignorant, becoming wizen crones hiding in tall ivory towers, poring over arcane tomes that nobody else understood except those who are also in the field. Knowledge has become so specialised that traditionally inseparable disciplines of mathematics and physics now deem each other's latest pursuits as trivial and inconsequential, phycisists and mathematicians would use different examples to illustrate the same point, each with their own slant.

Chaos science takes a new look at the simple pendulum and discovers much more than what we already know. Just as is written in the book, the simple pendulum is where an education in physics begins, any high school or college student (such as myself) would be able to solve any question on the pendulum without breaking a sweat. Yet when faced with a real physical pendulum, any physicists would have to make a few simplifying assumptions in order to 'solve' the system. Of course as you go higher level, these assumptions reduce in number but you cannot fully take away the most basic assumption. That friction and other dissipative forces account for the slight disparities in observations. Nobody would have thought that these slight disparities are actually worthy of study! I am unable to paraphrase the full discussion in the book... you'd have to try to get your hands on it to read for yourself! It's avaliable in Borders under Engineering and Science shelves!

On today's Who Wants to be A Millionare, Pangy is confronted with the final question. The MILLION-DOLLAR question.

How can a person get a life?
A : blah blah blah
B : blub blub blub
C : glug glug glug
D : do do doo

Pangy : "FD, I don't think this question is fair!"
FD : "Pangy, I have here the million dollar check that I will present to you.. IF you can answer that question correctly. I'm sure everybody in the studio is rooting for you."
Pangy : "OK, since I still have all my 3 life lines, I shall use them all.. I'd like to use the 50:50 please."

*sound effect* Options A and B are left.

Pangy : "Alright, and now I will ask for the audience assistance."
FD : "Members of the audience, please pick up your console and let's try to help Pangy win the million dollars. Is the answer, A, Blah blah blah. Or is it B, Blub blub blub. Please key in your opinion."

*sound effect* *graph appears*
FD : "Well, it seems like you won't be getting much help here Pangy. The audience is split right down the middle on A and B!"
Pangy : "I don't think it could be helped. This is a really very difficult question. I will use the phone assistance now."
FD : "Very well, we shall now call Ms Angel Ngiam, who would hopefully help Pangy here win the million dollars."

*phone dial tone* *call picked up*

Angel : "Hello?"
FD : " Hello! This is the Flying Dutchman and I am calling live from the studio for Who Wants to be A Millionare, is this Ms Angel Ngiam?"
Angel : "Yes I am."
FD : "Ms Angel, your friend here, Pangy has got a very difficult question here. In fact it is THE million dollar question. Would you like to help him out?"
Angel : "Yes of course! But he must give me a big treat if he wins! *laughter*"
FD : "I'm sure he would be very grateful and treat you to a very nice dinner if that happens, won't you Pangy?"
Pangy : "Yes sir! Of course I would!"
FD : "Alright then you have 30 seconds to ask Ms Angel the question and she would have to give you her anwer in that same 30 seconds. Good luck your time begins now."
Pangy : "Angel, how can a person get a life? Is it A, blah blah blah or B, blub blub blub?"

Angel (11:07 PM) :
wah!!!!!!!! pangy! u really got no life ar!?!
Angel (11:08 PM) :
j/king... but too kua zhang leh...
PangyWangy (11:08 PM) :
haha... quite no life lah! haha! last sem not as bored but also no life, self learning Java at library haha
PangyWangy (11:09 PM) :
how to get a life...
Angel (11:09 PM) :
sighz... me think i also not gonna have any life liao... so dun need to ask me...
PangyWangy (11:09 PM) :
haha....

Line is cut as the 30 seconds run out.

Pangy : "Guess that didn't go as planned."
FD : "Not at all indeed."
Pangy : "I'll just have to rely on myself. I'll go with..... B, blub blub blub."
FD : "Is that your final answer?"
Pangy : "Yes, B, blub blub blub."

*option B lights up* *dead silence in the studio* *suspense hangs thick in the air*

FD : "You can almost taste the suspense in the air.."
Pangy : "Yes.. it tastes like bitter medicine.." FD laughs a little.
FD : "The correct answer is...."

*Option A lights up* *defeated sound effect plays*

FD : "I'm sorry Pangy.. the correct answer is A..."
Pangy sighs.

Happy Birthday SP!

And so starts week2 of school. Still very slow and boring. Unlike last sem where I was wonderfully occupied self learning Java, always going to NLB to read more and more, over and over, Java books.

Had lunch at IKEA. Swedish meatballs are good! A tad small serving but nonetheless sufficient to last till 5, 6 o'clock. Very flavourful by itself and the sauce also tastes very good! Didn't like it that much with the jam but still not too bad.

The Taming Chaos lecture was a really slow start. Week 2 liao and it only started Lecture 0. The power thing is the lecturer even ended class at 5! At about 4.50 I left the LT for the loo and when I came back, everyone was packing up and leaving!

Other interesting things about the course is that we are allowed to discuss with our immediate neighbours while doing any of the 10 quizzes held in lecture time! There will also be 2 lecture times that there will be no lecture and we'll be having some reading assignment! It is very surprising how little material we will be covering in this sense.

Then had dinner at Cheese Prata@Fong Seng. OOhh.. we had cheese and sardine murtabak, cheese prata, plaster, one plain onion and 2 dinosaurs! Woah.. the murtabak was really damn good and worth it! Sardine, cheese and onions really taste good together. I think people who don't like sardines would even like to eat this delicious murtabak! All that for $10.60, not ex at all as dinner for 2.

Wah very slack leh this week. Been going orchard after my noon lectures. Not like last sem, spent quite a lot of time queueing in co-op for textbooks. Then actually thinking about it, I can't really remember what I did during the 1st week of last sem!

Starting to fall in love with the Peugeot 307 coupe convertible.. the one they used in one of the Canon Pictbridge camera ads. The one the gal kisses the guy on the cheek, their friend from the front passenger seat takes a photo and prints it out then it flies out of their hands. What a chio car! But even if I could afford it, Ade won't ride in it cos she's still afraid of coupes.

This December I spent a total of about $443 on myself, $207 on clothes, $231 on driving and somemore on Adeline. Not considering the other numbers, $443 on myself is surprisingly little.

Money that came in includes $180 from tuition, $400 from ERS and allowance.

Passion 99.5 has ended transmission. I am so sad... no more All Night Jazz, no more Voices, no more cool cool jazz on weeknights 8-11. Now I will have to try and bear with and listen to pop 98.7/93.3 or 'the best mix' as 95 puts it.

Chinese pop on 93.3 isn't that bad, but I'm not used to and now dislike the station's style. I also very disconnected with the chinese pop world and nowadays they all sing stuff that don't sound right to my ears. Gone are the 4 Heavenly Kings and the shi2 li4 pai4 singers. Most of the singers and groups now don't have that same sound that I like. Granted some sound good in their way but I'm still stuck on the music style of 6-7 years ago.
