I just watched "Why my vote matters" on Tomorrow.sg (I watched the follow-up program before managing to watch the original dialogue session and at first I was on the side of the 10, but...) and I think the 10 who had the dialogue with MM should be ashamed of themselves in the respect that they really hadn't done much careful and mature reflection. All those cries for fairness and level playing field are really quite immature. They did not try to put themselves in PAP's shoes to understand why they had to attract away all the best people, why they had to put opposition constituencies to the back of the upgrading queue. Some things are just unfair and what we, the people, have to watch out for is tyranny, incompetence and complacency, not unfairness.
Even so, the PAP-led government has always been fair to the people. As articulated by our National Anthemn "Regardless of race, language or religion. To build a democratic society, based on justice and equality" the PAP-led government has always gotten its priorities right, namely equal employment opportunity, basic healthcare, basic housing and the works.
All this wanting of a choice is very romantic but the reality of it is as MM Lee has said, the opposition is not up to mark. I think the two MPs in Potong Pasir and Hougang should take up the risk, leave their constituencies, gather the best of their parties and contest in a GRC, and espcially one that is held strongly by PAP such as Marine Parade. Having said that, I now applaud the Worker's Party for fielding young candidates to contest in Ang Moh Kio, hopefully to gain invaluable experience, and to contest in Aljunied where the PAP team is a strong one.
I have gained newfound respect for MM Lee, but still I will not go as far as to call him 'Singapore's Founding Father' and also I have been inspired to be more capable than the 10 who were on the show.
